BIO

Sami Swilks is an early career screenwriter living and working on Gadigal land in Sydney, Australia. She is the Development Co-ordinator at Curio Pictures and a recent graduate of the 2022 Masters of Arts Screen (Screenwriting) degree at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. She holds a bachelor degree in Communications (Media Arts and Production) from UTS, and cut her teeth in post-production, before realising she wanted to start at the other end of the process.

Sami has gained extensive on-set and in-house experience with MacGowan Films, Good Oil Films and Paper Moose. Independently, she has directed and produced music videos and shorts with artists including Kirin J Callinan, Dante Knows, and Hayley Mary (The Jezabels).   Born in a little town called Stroud, rearing cattle and injured birds, she first got her itch to tell stories when she attended the Dungog Film Festival. It would ultimately prove to this wee-country girl that could spin a good yarn, that filmmaking was a tangible passion.

Genre agnostic, with a comedic bent, Sami is interested in telling propulsive stories with compelling mystery engines and spicy hooks.

Beyond her love of filmmaking, you’ll find Sami free-diving, playing soccer, stuck in a Wikipedia blackhole, cooking tasty treats, or pensively gazing into nothing. Sometimes all at once.
